The old English meaning of 'apparition' is 'the action of appearing'. This series appeared through the action of painting without pre-ordained plan or structure. As with all paintings though, a piece develops within certain parameters. Mine are: limited form, dominance of colour, internal light and relationship between light and dark. These result in quiet and meditative pieces.
A moment in time captured as a still (plan). In a fractured and disjointed world, images move before our eyes in a constant flow. Still is a project to create something unified, balanced and arresting. To stop to look, to see colour in movement contained by horizontal bands.
The horizon line bisects our vision with a different atmosphere and colour above and below. This series explores when these atmospheres meet and when these colours touch. I use a minimal notation to explore the relationship that creates a world in balance above and below the horizon.
Earth is an exploration of texture and use of natural pigments to create a series of works, built up in layers to arrive at a seductive surface where form and colour are secondary to the different surface qualities expressed in each piece or multiple.
The constantly moving and changing quality of light on the sea has an almost ethereal quality. An internal light within the paintings mirrors this reflective light to give the work a life beyond representation. It therefore becomes a record of an experience, concerned not so much with being a window onto the world, but as an internal world, where the painting exists as an object in its own right.
